Airline Questions Answered
Booking flights is a huge painpoint for my clients. While I don’t book flights only, I do work with clients to book flights when they are booking an entire trip with me. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions about airlines and flights.
Flight Classes:
Economy Class: Economy class, often referred to simply as "coach," is the most budget-friendly option. It features basic seating arrangements with standard legroom and minimal frills. In-flight service typically includes complimentary beverages and snacks, though meals and larger drinks might be available for purchase on longer flights. Entertainment options could be provided through personal or shared screens.
Premium Economy: An upgrade from standard economy, premium economy offers extra comfort with wider seats, increased legroom, and enhanced recline. Passengers often enjoy upgraded meal service, priority boarding, and additional baggage allowance. It strikes a balance between affordability and comfort, appealing to those who want a bit more without splurging on a premium class.
Business Class: Business class is designed for travelers seeking an elevated experience, often featuring lie-flat seats or seats with enhanced recline, ample personal space, and more luxurious amenities. Travelers enjoy gourmet meals, premium beverages, and an extensive selection of in-flight entertainment. Additionally, business class typically includes access to airport lounges, expedited check-in, and boarding services.
First Class: The pinnacle of air travel, first class provides the ultimate in luxury and exclusivity. Passengers can expect spacious seating that often converts into a fully-flat bed, refined dining experiences, and top-tier entertainment options. Personalized service, complimentary amenities, and access to exclusive first-class lounges further enhance the experience. First class is generally only available on international or long-haul flights with major airlines.
How far in advance can flights be booked?
Flights can be booked 330 days in advance.
What documents do I need for domestic and international flights?-
For domestic flights, a government-issued ID is typically required. Starting on May 7, 2025, a REAL ID will be required for domestic flights. This can include a compliant driver’s license or state ID, U.S. passport or passport card, U.S. military ID or a Green Card. International flights usually necessitate a passport, and potentially a visa, depending on the destination.
How early should I arrive at the airport for my flight?
Generally, it's advisable to arrive at least 2 hours prior for domestic flights and 3 hours for international flights, though this can vary based on the airport and time of day.
How long should a layover be when flights involve connections?
I always suggest a minimum of 2 hours when flying domestically and 3 hours when flying internationally. If the initial flight departs late or is delayed on arrival, there must be time to deplane and get to the next gate, which may be a distance from the arrival gate. And when flying internationally, you may have to go through a customs checkpoint to get to your next flight.
What can be carried onto a plane?
Most airlines have specific restrictions on liquids, aerosols, and gels in hand luggage, usually 100 ml per item packed in a transparent plastic bag. Additionally, sharp objects and other restricted items should be checked with your airline prior to travel.
How do I know what my baggage allowance is?
It's important to check the airline’s website or your booking confirmation for specific details.
What should I do if my flight is delayed or cancelled?
In case of delays or cancellations, contact your airline directly to discuss rebooking options. I suggest that you both get in line and on the phone as you may have better luck speaking with an airline representative on the phone, especially if the lines are long. Travel insurance might also offer coverage for these inconveniences, depending on the policy.
How can I ensure getting through airport security quickly?
I recommend that my clients enroll in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry to speedily move through airports. But if they don’t have that option, it is important to have travel documents ready, wear easily removable shoes, and limit metal items on your person.
Do airlines offer special assistance services?
Most airlines provide assistance for reduced-mobility passengers, unaccompanied minors, and others with special needs. I always arrange for this assistance in advance.
What happens if luggage gets lost?
If your luggage is lost, report it immediately to the airline’s baggage service desk. Retain any relevant documents and receipts, as travel insurance may help compensate for lost or delayed luggage. I suggest that my clients put trackers in their bags, like the Apple AirTag and I I always recommend that they carry-on their bages, if possible. I also recommend.
